Meet Amy

I’ve been working as a travel journalist for 25 years, visiting and writing about topics as diverse as uncovering Martin Luther’s Germany, hiking Shinto pilgrimage routes in Japan, gorilla trekking in Rwanda, and overnighting in New Zealand’s wine country. Michigan is my home base. I love living in the Great Lakes State, where I can snowshoe in the UP, museum-hop in Detroit, beachcomb in Ludington, and sip wine in Traverse City, and then return to my desk in Holland to write about it all.

My work has been published in National Geographic Traveler, AFAR, Conde Nast Traveler, AARP, Hemispheres, The Saturday Evening Post, Coastal Living, Midwest Living, Backpacker, Men’s Fitness, Shape, Garden & Gun, Flower, the Chicago Tribune, the Minneapolis Star Tribune, the Los Angeles Times, and many AAA magazines. I’ve written destination guides for KLM, Air France, British Airways, Air New Zealand, Holiday Inn, Frommers, and AARP. And I have authored or contributed to more than 20 travel books, ranging from the Michelin guide to Germany to Harley-Davidson’s Ride Atlas of North America.

I’m a member of the Society of American Travel Writers, the Outdoor Writers Association, and the Midwest Travel Journalists Association. When I’m not traveling or writing, I enjoy reading, flower gardening, sipping good Scotch, and exploring the great outdoors with my family.
