I’ve been working as a travel journalist for more than 25 years, visiting and writing about topics as diverse as following the Asparagus Trail in Germany, uncovering Detroit's best speakeasies, gorilla trekking in Rwanda, and overnighting in New Zealand’s wine country. Michigan is my home base, but I divide my time between the US and Germany. I am equally at home snowshoeing in the UP and catching a Bach cantata in Leipzig, restaurant-hopping in Detroit and meandering through museums in Berlin. Afterward, I return to my desk to write about it all.

My work has been published in The New York Times, National Geographic Traveler, AFAR, Food & Wine, Conde Nast Traveler, AARP, Hemispheres, The Saturday Evening Post, Backpacker, Garden & Gun, Tripadvisor, and many AAA magazines. I’ve written destination guides for KLM, Air France, British Airways, Air New Zealand, and AARP. And I have authored or contributed to more than 20 travel books, ranging from the Michelin guide to Germany to Harley-Davidson’s Ride Atlas of North America.

I’m a member of the Society of American Travel Writers and won the TravMedia Travel Journalist of the Year, North America, in 2019. When I’m not traveling or writing, I enjoy reading, flower gardening, sipping good Scotch, and exploring the great outdoors with my family.
